Saturday morning at 11:00am sharp, I walked through the doors of the Vancouver Baker’s Market. Inside were a dozen vendors flogging their sugary wares in the small warehouse space. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the concept (heck, I’ve always said cookies are my favorite food group) but this was the smallest market I’ve ever seen.

Based on the location, price point and floor space, I decided that this was not a place for children. I’ve always said, “why give a kid Godiva when he’s happy with a Hersey’s Kiss”. Call me cheap, but there’s no way I’m going to spend $3.00 on a cookie for my child, if I can help it.

It felt a little like I was attending a bake sale in a church basement except that the cookies, cakes and cupcakes were über funky with an über price to match. Most of the vendors had samples for tasting which was fantastic. All the baked goods I tried were really tasty.

Here are a few of the noteworthy “Num Nums”:

Yaletown Brownies
-The peppermint brownies  & the caramel pecan brownies were tasty and oh-so rich.

Sweet Delights from the kitchen of the Vegan Vixen
-The chocolate cupcake with peppermint icing blew me away. I couldn’t believe it was vegan…shocking!

Yummy baked goods for you
-I sampled the cookies and cream and  giant peanut butter cookies plus the macadamia nut bar and then purchased a monster cookie and a black bottom coconut bar. This was good stuff.

Although in its infancy, a Baker’s Market is a brilliant idea.  I hope the market can build momentum and grow.
