Call the people at “Guinness”, Vancouver is holding the World’s Longest Garage Sale. At least that’s how they’re billing it.

Long or short, I’m a sucker for a garage sale. I love wading through junk in search of  a deal, treasure, thing I really don’t need but want. That’s why I like Winner’s it’s like a sophisticated garage sale. Hey, you have to dig to find the good stuff.

Armed with my sister (she’s the aggressive one), I will brave the 30 blocks of bargains on Blenheim (say that 10 times fast). It’s a shame the sale’s only on from 10:00am until 2:00pm (looks like we’ll have to be strategic and pace ourselves).

Tis the season for rummage sales, garage sales, school bazaars, church bazaars and alike. I love spring…out with the old and in with the new.

I just got back from the sample sale at the GX Building complex. Two neighbouring buildings are holding sample sales; one contains children’s clothes, the other adult clothes. There are over 50 showrooms selling brand names such as Mexx Kidds, Misco Girl, Lovely Girl, Point Zero, Stephen Joseph and more. These are great little buildings to stroll around. I bumped into a lot of other Mommies at 10:00am this morning.

Baby clothes (onesies, sleeping sacks, socks, sleepers, hats etc…) make up the real deals at this sale. If you have a newborn or are a regular guest at baby showers, this is the place for you. If you are on a budget and have a boy around 2-3 years old there isn’t much selection. As you already know (if you have a boy), girls clothes usually make up most of the store and boys clothes can be found on one or two racks.

If you’re looking for dirt cheap clothing,  go to a Kids Swap. The clothing here is mostly designer, priced at cost or just below cost. Even so, I couldn’t resist getting a few things. A hilarious toque and collared shirt ($20) and an army-style hat ($3).

It was a fun little outting and I’ll probably go again next time…and yes, I’ll probably take Grampa again too…it makes shopping so much easier when he can walk Daemian around and dole out the cheese fish.

The sample sale continues until May 1st.

How much do I love this book? Let me count the ways…

1. I love the Vancouver-specific details:

  • a heron in English Bay
  • an Aquabus in False Creek with two seals looking on
  • a flood of cherry blossoms
  • a street performer at Granville Island in front of La Baguette et l’Echalote
  • the waterpark in Granville Island
  • the raccoons in Stanley Park
  • the snowboarders sailing down “The Cut” on Grouse Mountain
  • PLUS a smattering of sailboats, float planes and Canada geese

2. I love the cute drawings

3. I love its sturdy board book construction

4. I love the colors

5. I love the last few lines:

“It’s nice to see you, freighters, nestled in the bay.
Thank you for sharing a wonderful day.”

“Glitter brightly, West End lights.
Sleep tight, Vancouverites.”

How cute is that? Pretty darn cute, if you ask me. I can’t wait to take Caden to the locations mentioned in the book. We can cap off the day by reading about the places we visited. What a great concept.

It feels like a Vancouverite wrote this book; that is, if I overlook the fact that the cyclists are going around Stanley Park in the wrong direction (It’s still one way, isn’t it?). The tidbit about the petting zoo in Stanley Park is not longer accurate either but what the heck, perfection is overrated…at least in my world.

There are  “Good Night” books cropping up for other cities: Boston, Seattle, San Francisco. The only other Canadian city I’ve spotted is Montreal. Hopefully, they’re working on the others as we speak.

p.s. Thank you Sousanna, we love the book.
